Building Restoration

Of particular interest to specialists in restoring old buildings

You are used to being inundated with technical spec sheets and performance claims. You won't be getting that here. What you will find on this page, and throughout the web site, are discussions of the situations you confront constantly in our field. We believe you will find this commonsense, logical presentation of information of great value to the practice of your profession.

For instance:

PAINT REMOVAL:

Aldon Products
Premium Stripper   removes much tougher coatings than paint, such as acrylic, epoxy and urethane sealers. Paint removal is relatively easy for this product. Also, it is a controllable semi-gel. Also used for graffiti removal.

CRUMBLY OR POWDERING OLD MORTAR:

The use of one of Aldon's solvent based penetrating sealers will strengthen and "glue together" the mortar, plus improve adhesion to the brick, tile, or stone. See the Aldon  How To Choose The Best Sealer For Your Project to pick the correct sealer for the surface type.

COLOR PROBLEMS WITH GROUT/MORTAR, BRICK, STONE, TILE:

An Aldon "color enhancing" sealer will tend to disguise minor color problems plus make the natural colors richer. They also tend to blend in and strengthen tuck point patching. See the Aldon How To Choose The Best Sealer For Your Project  to pick the correct sealer for the surface type.

MORTAR SMEARS (ORIGINAL OR FROM TUCK POINTING) IS STAINING OLD BRICKWORK:

Grout Residue
Remover
This product cleans off unwanted cement based stains.

CLEANING WITH A PRESSURE WASHER:

Obviously extreme caution must be exercised to not remove the soft brick and mortar.

If efflorescence has been a problem, a pressure washer forcing water into the masonry at a higher quantity than just a water hose would have a high likelihood of bringing out even more efflorescence.

EFFLORESCENCE: Efflorescence can be easily treated with Aldon

Efflorescence Treatment
and reoccurrence prevented - see the   section on "Efflorescence".

You and/or the owner will find it easy to pick the correct sealer for any material while at the same time compensating for any troublesome characteristics inherent in some floor and wall materials.
